    Two different gallons, one word

    The US liquid gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, which works out to exactly 3.785411784 liters. It descends from the English wine gallon standardised in 1707 and was retained by the United States after independence. The imperial gallon, defined in the UK in 1824 as the volume of ten pounds of water at a specified temperature, is 4.54609 liters — about 20.2% larger.

    This is the single most consequential unit ambiguity in everyday use. A '30 mpg' car in the UK is not as efficient as a '30 mpg' car in the US; it is more efficient, because the imperial gallon holds more fuel.     Fuel economy: the conversion people get wrong

    Metric countries measure consumption, not economy: liters per 100 kilometers, where lower is better. The US and UK measure economy: miles per gallon, where higher is better. The two are reciprocals, so you cannot average mpg figures, and a five-mpg improvement means something completely different at 15 mpg than at 40 mpg.

    The conversion from US mpg to L/100 km is 235.215 ÷ mpg. From imperial mpg it is 282.481 ÷ mpg. So a 30 US mpg car uses 7.84 L/100 km, while a 30 imperial mpg car uses 9.42 L/100 km — the same headline number describing two meaningfully different vehicles.

    Because L/100 km is a consumption figure, it is the better one for money decisions. Going from 15 to 20 mpg saves far more fuel over 10,000 miles than going from 40 to 50 mpg, which is invisible if you think in mpg and obvious if you think in liters per 100 km. Fleet managers and appraisers who compare running costs across borders should standardise on the metric figure for exactly this reason.

    For a quick sanity check on any fuel conversion: a typical 60-liter European fuel tank holds 15.9 US gallons or 13.2 imperial gallons. If your converted tank figure is not roughly in that band for an ordinary passenger car, you have used the wrong gallon.

    Cooking, recipes, and the cup problem

    American recipes measure liquids by volume in cups, and a US customary cup is 236.588 ml, usually rounded to 240 ml on nutrition labels. The metric cup used in Australia and New Zealand is 250 ml. A UK recipe cup, when used at all, is 284 ml — half an imperial pint. Copying a recipe across traditions without checking the cup can shift a liquid by 20%.

    Tablespoons diverge too: 14.79 ml in the US, 15 ml in most metric countries, and 20 ml in Australia. For most cooking the difference is irrelevant, but for leavening agents, gelatine, and anything in a small quantity it is not.

    The reliable fix is to convert everything to milliliters for liquids and grams for solids, which is what professional and modern published recipes do. Volume measurement of solids — the American cup of flour — is inherently imprecise anyway, varying up to 20% with how the cup is filled.

    One useful anchor: 1 liter is 4.227 US cups, or 33.8 US fluid ounces. A 2-liter soda bottle is 0.528 US gallons, or 67.6 US fluid ounces. A 750 ml wine bottle is 25.4 US fluid ounces, which is why a case of twelve is often described as nine liters.

    Worked example: filling a tank on both sides of the Atlantic

    A rental car in France takes 52 liters to fill at €1.79 per liter, a total of €93.08. To compare that against home, convert: 52 ÷ 3.785412 = 13.74 US gallons. The price per US gallon is €93.08 ÷ 13.74 = €6.78, and at a 1.08 exchange rate that is about $7.32 per gallon.

    The same 52 liters is 11.44 imperial gallons, so a British driver would describe the fill as costing £6.90 per gallon at parity — a different number for exactly the same fuel. Neither figure is wrong; they are answers to different questions, which is precisely why the unqualified word 'gallon' should be avoided in any document that crosses a border.

    Now the efficiency side. The car covered 640 km on that tank. In metric terms: 52 ÷ 640 × 100 = 8.13 L/100 km. Converting to US mpg: 235.215 ÷ 8.13 = 28.9 mpg. Converting to imperial mpg: 282.481 ÷ 8.13 = 34.7 mpg. Reporting the imperial figure to an American audience overstates the car's efficiency by 20%.

    The general procedure: convert volumes to liters first, do the arithmetic in metric, and convert the final answer once, into whichever gallon your reader uses — and label it explicitly as US or imperial.

    Where volume conversions show up beyond the fuel pump

    Pools and tanks are usually the largest volumes a homeowner will ever convert. A pool 8 m × 4 m with an average depth of 1.5 m holds 48 cubic meters, which is 48,000 liters or 12,680 US gallons. Chemical dosing instructions are written per 10,000 gallons in the US and per cubic meter in Europe, so getting the conversion right is the difference between balanced water and a wasted afternoon.

    Rainwater harvesting and irrigation mix units constantly. One inch of rain on a 1,000 square-foot roof yields about 623 US gallons, or 2,360 liters. Tank capacities are sold in liters in most of the world and in gallons in the US, and drip-irrigation emitters are rated in liters per hour internationally and gallons per hour domestically.

    Industrial and shipping containers have their own conventions. The standard drum is 55 US gallons (208 L) in North America and 200 L (52.8 US gal) elsewhere — deliberately similar, deliberately not identical.
