    The exact factor and its history

    Since the International Yard and Pound Agreement of 1959, the international foot has been defined as exactly 0.3048 meters.     Height: the most-searched conversion of all

    Human height is where this conversion is used most. Americans, Britons, and Canadians state height in feet and inches; nearly everyone else uses centimeters. Six feet is 1.8288 meters, or 183 cm. Five foot ten is 177.8 cm. Five foot six is 167.6 cm. Because heights cluster in a narrow band, memorising a handful of anchors covers most conversations.

    The arithmetic for a feet-and-inches height is two steps. Convert the whole figure to inches — feet × 12 plus the remaining inches — then multiply by 2.54 to get centimeters. Five foot eleven is (5 × 12) + 11 = 71 inches, and 71 × 2.54 = 180.34 cm. Working from feet alone and treating the inches as a decimal fraction of a foot is the classic error: 5.11 feet is 155.8 cm, nothing like five foot eleven.

    Construction, architecture, and drawing conventions

    Metric construction drawings are usually dimensioned in millimeters, not meters, because millimeters remove decimal points and therefore remove a category of error. When a rentable area is quoted in both square feet and square meters, the two figures frequently disagree by one to two percent because someone converted a rounded number.     Worked example: a ceiling height that has to clear equipment

    A warehouse tenant needs 4.5 m of clear height for a racking system. The American landlord's marketing sheet advertises '15 foot clear'. Converting: 15 ft × 0.3048 = 4.572 m. The building clears the requirement by 72 mm — under three inches, which is inside the margin that structural deflection, sprinkler heads, and light fixtures typically consume.

    The real check is against the lowest obstruction, not the deck. If sprinkler heads hang 250 mm below the structure, the true clear height is 4.322 m and the racking will not fit. This is the standard failure mode in cross-border industrial deals: the headline number converts fine, but it was never the number that mattered.

    Run it the other way for equipment. A machine specified at 3.6 m tall needs 11 ft 9.8 in of clearance plus service space above it. Quoting '12 feet' to the contractor leaves 60 mm, which will not survive contact with reality once a housekeeping pad and levelling feet are added.

    The discipline that prevents this: convert to a common unit, add the real-world allowances in that unit, and only convert back at the very end. Adding allowances in one system and converting in another is where the rounding errors compound.

    Aviation, hiking, and the places feet survived metrication

    Aviation is the largest holdout. Altitudes worldwide are given in feet — flight level 350 is 35,000 feet, or 10,668 m — even in countries that are otherwise fully metric. The exceptions are China, North Korea, and Mongolia, which use meters, and Russia, which has moved to feet for flight levels while retaining meters for some approach data. Runway lengths follow the same split.

    Mountaineering keeps both systems in parallel. Everest is 8,849 m or 29,032 ft; the 8,000-meter peaks have no imperial equivalent that anyone uses, but American peaks are almost always cited in feet, and the '14ers' of Colorado are defined by a 14,000-foot threshold that has no metric meaning at all.

    Diving inverts the pattern: depth is in meters almost everywhere, including on American dive computers, because decompression tables were standardised metrically. Recreational limits of 18 m, 30 m, and 40 m are 59, 98, and 131 feet respectively.

    Nautical distance is its own system. A nautical mile is 1,852 meters exactly — originally one minute of latitude — which is 6,076 feet, about 15% longer than a statute mile. A knot is one nautical mile per hour. Converting boat speeds using the statute mile understates them by that same 15%.
