    The exact factor and where it comes from

    Since the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement, the foot has been defined as exactly 0.3048 meters. That is a definition rather than a measurement, so it carries no uncertainty: any error in a converted figure comes from your input, never from the conversion.     Before 1959 the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Commonwealth each maintained slightly different feet based on their own physical standards, differing by a couple of parts per million.     The one legacy exception was the US survey foot, defined as 1200/3937 meters, roughly two parts per million longer than the international foot.     Feet and inches, not decimal feet

    The most common mistake in this conversion is stopping at decimal feet. Converting 1.75 meters gives 5.74 feet, and people then read that as five feet seven inches — but 0.74 of a foot is 8.86 inches, so the height is actually five feet nine. The fractional part of a decimal foot must be multiplied by twelve, never read as inches directly.

    Sport and distance: a 25 m pool is 82.02 ft, a 50 m Olympic pool is 164.04 ft, a 100 m sprint is 328.08 ft, and a football pitch at 105 m long is 344.49 ft. A 400 m running track lap is 1,312.34 ft, just under a quarter mile.

    Land and elevation: 1,000 m = 3,280.84 ft, so a 3,000 m peak is 9,842.5 ft and the 8,848 m summit of Everest is 29,031.7 ft. Aviation flight levels are still quoted in feet almost everywhere, so a cruising altitude of 35,000 ft is 10,668 m.

    Where each unit is still authoritative

    Knowing which figure in a listing is the original and which is the courtesy conversion prevents a lot of confusion. In the United States, building plans, lumber, property dimensions, and personal height are genuinely in feet and inches, and the metric figure is derived. Almost everywhere else, construction drawings and property listings are genuinely in meters and millimeters.

    Aviation is the notable global exception: altitude and elevation are quoted in feet nearly worldwide, including in fully metric countries, because international air traffic standardised early on the foot. Runway lengths, however, are often published in both. Maritime charts use meters for depth in most of the world but fathoms and feet on older US charts.

    The practical rule: convert once, from the authoritative figure, and keep the original alongside it in any document that will be read by both audiences. Converting a converted number, then rounding again, is how a 2.4 m wall becomes 7 ft 10 in becomes 2.39 m.

    Precision, significant figures, and common errors

    Because the factor is exact, the honest precision of a result equals the precision of the input. A measurement of 12 meters taken with a tape read to the nearest meter should not be reported as 39.3701 feet; 39 feet, or about 39 ft 4 in, reflects what was actually measured.

    A frequent error is converting area or volume with the linear factor. Square meters to square feet uses 0.3048 squared, so 1 m² = 10.7639 ft², and cubic meters to cubic feet uses 0.3048 cubed, giving 1 m³ = 35.3147 ft³. Applying 3.28084 to an area understates it by a factor of more than three.

    Another is mixing up meters with yards, since they are visually close: 1 meter is 1.0936 yards, so a 100-yard American football field is 91.44 meters, not 100. Sports distances in particular suffer from this, and the gap of nearly ten percent is far too large to ignore.

    Finally, watch the direction. If your answer is larger than the input, you went from meters to feet; if smaller, feet to meters. A meter is roughly three and a third feet, so any result that is not roughly triple or roughly a third of the input has been converted the wrong way.

    Using the converter for real tasks

    Buying furniture internationally: take the metric dimension from the manufacturer, convert it, and then compare against your measured space in the same units. A 2.1 m sofa is 6 ft 10.7 in, which will not clear a 6 ft 8 in doorway on the diagonal without tipping.

    Fitness and training plans: a 5 km run is 16,404 feet or 3.11 miles, and a 1.5 m box jump is 4 ft 11 in. Gym equipment specifications from European manufacturers list footprints in centimeters, so divide by 30.48 to get feet directly.

    Travel and hiking: European trail signs give elevation gain in meters. A 900 m climb is 2,953 ft, which is a substantial day. Converting before you set out gives a much clearer sense of effort if you are used to feet.
