    The exact factor and where it comes from

    The statute mile is 5,280 feet. Since the international foot has been defined as exactly 0.3048 meters since 1959, the mile is exactly 5,280 × 0.3048 = 1,609.344 meters, or 1.609344 kilometers. That figure is a definition rather than a measurement, so the conversion carries no uncertainty whatsoever — only the number of decimals you choose to display.

    Inverting it, one kilometer is 1 ÷ 1.609344 = 0.62137119 miles, usually shortened to 0.621. A useful consequence: five miles is almost exactly eight kilometers (8.047 km), an approximation accurate to within 0.6% that has survived on road signs and in runners' heads for a century.

    The strange 5,280 comes from Roman and English land measure colliding. The Roman mile was a thousand paces — mille passus — of five feet each, giving 5,000 feet. English law later redefined the mile in terms of the furlong, a plowing unit of 660 feet, and set the mile at eight furlongs. Eight × 660 = 5,280, and the awkward number has been with us ever since.

    Running and cycling distances in both systems

    Race distances are metric almost everywhere, even in the United States, because the standard track is 400 meters. A 5K is 3.107 miles, a 10K is 6.214 miles, a half marathon is 13.109 miles, and a marathon is 26.219 miles. The marathon's odd 42.195 km comes from the 1908 London Olympics, where the course was lengthened so it could finish in front of the royal box.

    Pace conversion trips people up more than distance does. An 8-minute mile is not an 8-minute kilometer — it is a 4:58 kilometer, because you are covering a shorter unit. To convert pace, divide minutes-per-mile by 1.609344 to get minutes-per-kilometer; multiply to go the other way. A 5:00/km pace is an 8:03/mile pace.

    Cycling speeds show the same trap in reverse. 20 mph is 32.2 km/h, and 30 km/h is 18.6 mph. Because speed is distance over time, speed conversion uses the same factor as distance, but pace — time over distance — uses its reciprocal. Mixing the two up is the single most common conversion error in training logs.

    Treadmills sold in the United States default to miles per hour, while most fitness apps and European gyms default to kilometers per hour. If your watch says you ran 10 and the treadmill says 6.2, nothing is broken — one is counting kilometers and the other miles.

    Driving, speed limits, and fuel economy

    Speed limits convert to unrounded numbers, which is why signage never converts directly. A 60 mph limit is 96.6 km/h, but no country posts 96 — they post 100 km/h (62.1 mph) as the nearest sensible round figure. Crossing from the United States into Canada or Mexico, the number on the sign goes up while the actual permitted speed changes only slightly.

    Common equivalents worth memorising: 25 mph = 40 km/h, 30 mph = 48 km/h, 50 mph = 80 km/h, 60 mph = 97 km/h, 70 mph = 113 km/h, and 100 km/h = 62 mph. In practice, halving the km/h figure and adding a tenth gets you close to mph: 120 km/h → 60 + 6 = 66, against a true 74.6 — the shortcut drifts at high speeds, so use the calculator when it matters.

    Fuel economy is not a straight conversion because the two systems invert each other. Miles per gallon measures distance per fuel, while liters per 100 km measures fuel per distance. The bridge is 235.215 ÷ mpg = L/100 km. Thirty mpg is 7.84 L/100 km; 6 L/100 km is 39.2 mpg. Higher is better in one system and worse in the other, which is why casual comparison so often goes wrong.

    American and Imperial gallons differ too — a US gallon is 3.785 liters and a UK gallon is 4.546 — so a British 40 mpg is a US 33.3 mpg for the same car. Any cross-border fuel comparison needs the gallon defined before the number means anything.

    Worked example: planning a road trip across systems

    Suppose you are driving from Detroit to Toronto, roughly 240 miles. Converting: 240 × 1.609344 = 386.2 kilometers. Your Canadian rental car's dashboard will read kilometers, and its trip computer will estimate remaining range in kilometers, so having the total in the same unit avoids constant mental arithmetic.

    Now estimate travel time. Most of the Canadian route is posted at 100 km/h. At that speed, 386.2 km takes 3.86 hours, or about 3 hours 52 minutes of pure driving. Doing the same calculation in mixed units — 240 miles at 100 km/h — produces nonsense, and it is a surprisingly common error in trip planners.

    Fuel next. A car rated at 32 mpg (US) converts to 235.215 ÷ 32 = 7.35 L/100 km. Over 386.2 km that is 28.4 liters, which is 7.5 US gallons. At CAD 1.65 per liter the fuel cost is about CAD 47 — a figure you cannot reach at all without converting both distance and volume.

    The discipline that keeps this clean is the same one engineers use: convert everything into one system at the start, do all arithmetic there, and convert back only for the final answer you need to communicate. Converting midway through a chain of calculations is where rounding errors and unit mix-ups creep in.

    Nautical miles, and the countries that never went metric

    A nautical mile is a different animal: 1,852 meters exactly, originally defined as one minute of latitude along a meridian. That is 1.151 statute miles, so a 100-nautical-mile leg is 115 statute miles or 185 kilometers. A knot is one nautical mile per hour, which makes 20 knots equal to 23 mph or 37 km/h. Marine and aviation distances stay nautical worldwide regardless of local metrication.

    Only three countries have not formally adopted the metric system: the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar. In practice the picture is more mixed. The United Kingdom posts road distances and speed limits in miles while selling fuel in liters and produce in kilograms. Ireland switched road signs to kilometers in 2005, so a drive across the Irish border swaps systems mid-journey.

    The United States is more metric internally than it looks. Science, medicine, the military, and most manufacturing run on metric units; the mile survives largely in road transport, athletics, and everyday speech.
